Arabella Kennard

I am part of the communications team for the ReFLEX project. I also play a key role in deploying assets for the project and co-ordinate activities to maximise local inclusivity.

Since graduating in Geography from the University of Edinburgh, I’ve developed an interest and passion for working on projects involved in encouraging low carbon living and tackling climate change. I was involved in various student groups and projects including the 2050 Climate Group: Younger Leader Programme, and an AIESEC Global Volunteer for a sustainability charity in Bogota, Colombia. These experiences have given me a good understanding and appreciation that there are multiple ways to approach low carbon living and tackle climate change.

My previous role was as Project Officer for the Kyle of Sutherland’s Energy Advice Service funded by Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund. The project aimed to reduce local carbon emissions by offering energy advice to householders and delivering Carbon Literacy training to community groups. Training for this role included a Carbon Literacy Facilitator course and the City and Guild’s Energy Awareness course, however neither of these taught me the nuances involved in working with members of the community and working through their individual concerns and challenges. Instead these insights were gleaned through my involvement in community engagement on a daily basis, offering in-home advice and support to individuals as well as to the wider community through local campaigns and workshops. I particularly valued these experiences and working closely with each individual to unravel problems or difficult situations was especially fulfilling.

I believe it’s important to consider things from different perspectives, particularly when working with a diverse range of organisations, groups and individuals. At CES, I am grateful we all share this approach and I believe we are all proactive in ensuring solutions are bespoke and inclusive to meet individual needs.

I enjoy getting outside and being active as much as possible (and where the Orkney weather allows!) I’m a keen traveller and love discovering new places and cultures both near and far.

I’ve scored a goal for Scotland during an international game – but I won’t tell you the sport!
