Schools programme
Schools all over Scotland are getting turned on to renewable energy, whether it's a small wind turbine, a wood fuel boiler or solar panels to make electricity. Recent installations include a biomass boiler part -funded by HICEC (Community Energy Scotland's predecessor) at Dingwall Primary School (right).
Community Energy Scotland is able to provide advice and support to schools in the Highlands and Islands through the Scottish Government's Low Carbon Building Programme (LCBP). The programme can provide 50% of the cost of any renewable energy installation generating up to 50kW of energy or 45kW of heat. (Community Energy Scotland can also advise on sources for the remaining funding).
Community Energy Scotland works with schools and local authorities at all stages of the application process from initial assessments and applications, through to installations of renewable equipment and setting up maintenance plans.
Community Energy Scotland is keen for pupils to become involved in generating ideas for the energy needs for their own school. Learning through technologies installed can be more exciting and relevant than theoretical lessons. Community Energy Scotland's School Renewable Development Officer, Brid McKibben, can come along to your school and give advice on how installations can relate to your school curriculum and can give a talk on renewable energy at your school. Brid can be contacted on 01349 860130.
