Shapinsay Development Trust – Turbine Development Officer & Community Powerdown Officer

An exciting opportunity has arisen for individuals with an interest in renewable technology, carbon reduction and/or community sustainability and development to fill the following posts. Applicants should be computer literate, with good communication, organisational and team working skills along with the ability to work to deadlines and with minimum supervision. Enthusiasm and a flexible approach are also essential.

TURBINE DEVELOPMENT OFFICER 

Part time: 17,5 hours per week
Salary Scale: £12.50 per hour
Duration: 2 years
 
Shapinsay Development Trust is one of four community groups in Orkney appointing a part time Turbine Development Officers to support them during the construction and installation phases of their 900KW revenue generating wind turbine projects. In addition to these posts, the groups are engaging a joint project management contractor to be responsible for planning and co-ordinating the installation of these 4 sites, plus one on Eday. The successful applicant for this post will work with the local trust board and joint Project Management contractor to ensure timely and cost effective delivery of this project.
The successful candidate will have a good understanding of relevant construction projects, experience of liaising with contractors and of drawing up reports. The ability to engage effectively with all stakeholders is essential.
 
Funded by HIE Orkney and the Scottish Government’s Community and Renewable Energy Scheme, supported by Community Energy Scotland.
 

COMMUNITY POWERDOWN OFFICER 

Part time: 21 hours per week
Salary Scale: £10,0000 – 11,000
Duration: July 2010 - March 2011
 
Shapinsay Development Trust has identified a range of projects to advance under the Powerdown initiative including improving the energy efficiency of local housing stock and the establishment of a dial-a-bus community transport service using a “green” vehicle. The Powerdown Officers role is to investigate and progress these projects, prepare project plans, funding applications and anticipated carbon savings for Shapinsay.
 
The Powerdown officer will not only be expected to liaise and communicate effectively with the community, but also with the Powerdown network to ensure that their community’s projects and carbon reduction activities are successful and that other groups benefit from the expertise built up on Shapinsay.

International Resources and Recycling Institute – IRRI

 
Graduate Trainee Scheme Placements – We have 2 x Graduate Trainee positions available, £14,000 - £17,000, both for secondment to Community Energy Scotland. One of these positions will be located in Orkney and the other one in Moffat, Dumfries and Galloway
 
Fixed Term Contract – to June 2012, with potential for extension
 
As part of the SMALLEST programme (www.smallestnpp.eu), a pioneering graduate trainee scheme is being established for IRRI by Community Energy Scotland (www.communityenergyscotland.org.uk) in the locations set out above.   Community Energy Scotland (CES) is Scotland’s primary delivery body for renewable energy services to communities. IRRI is a charity committed to advancing the theory and practice of resource use. IRRI is a partner in SMALLEST, a project funded by the Northern Periphery Programme to accelerate conversion to renewable energy by rural communities throughout the Northern Periphery of Europe. As part of the programme, IRRI and CES wish to innovate with the first known graduate trainee scheme to train graduates in the skills required to be a Project Development Officer in CES. The successful candidates will be trained in:
 
·         Dealing with community groups, voluntary sector, social enterprise.
·         Energy conservation and micro-renewables
  • Larger-scale renewable energy development (eg wind farms, district heating)
  • Energy policy and regulation, in particular the incentive framework
·         Communication and writing skills
·         Delegating and managing external suppliers.
The successful candidates will have a degree from a UK University or College and will be:
·         Accomplished in word and excel, with confidence in producing documents and diagrams
·         Well organized and secure under pressure
·         Team working skills
·         Must also be comfortable with travelling inside and outside Scotland

 Isle of Muck Community Enterprise Ltd

Project Officer-Renewable Electricity Scheme

Part- Time, 22hrs per week
Salary £22,500pa
 
Isle of Muck Community Enterprise Ltd which owns the Island’s electricity supply system would like to recruit a part-time project officer on a self-employed basis to help deliver a replacement for the Island’s renewable energy scheme. The contract will be for 12 months and is funded by Community Energy Scotland and Highlands and Islands Enterprise.                                   
The successful applicant will be responsible for securing funding for the project, undertake research and community consultation and co-ordinate the design, tendering and installation of the system through to final commissioning.
Applicants should have a good technical understanding of, and ideally experience in delivering renewable energy projects. Good communication skills are essential, with the ability to work with the islanders and the statutory bodies involved. There is no requirement to live on the island, but an ability to travel to the island is essential.
