Stornoway Waterwheel
| The Stornoway Trust Western Isles | Hydro | |
| Summary: The Stornoway Trust, in partnership with the Stornoway Amenity Trust, have restored and revived the site of a historic watermill in the Trust-owned Stornoway Castle Grounds. The watermill was originally constructed in 1816 but destroyed by fire in 1890. The restoration project is intended to revive an aspect of Stornoways’s history and to create an additional visitors’ attraction to the area, while creating general interest in issues of renewable energy. The waterwheel generates 4kW of hydro power, which is used for lighting of the grounds, as well as for an interpretive centre with information display boards intended for the visiting public. The Trust’s website (www.stornowayamentiytrust.co.uk) provides further information on the waterwheel project. | ||

Local input The Waterwheel Project was constructed with maximum local input. Stornoway contractors I.M.Murray Engineering and Gordon Diesel Services built the waterwheel, with technical advice from the Pedley Wood Trust of Cheshire, England, with design fees of the Pedley Trust used to fund further waterwheel projects in Sri Lanka . The timber-built interpretive centre and wooden bridge across the Glen river were built by the Stornoway Trust Sawmill, with timber supplied from the Trust’s own Castle Grounds woodland. The mill point construction, mill race, weir and waterwheel civil engineering works were carried out by Aggregate Industries, Stornoway. Landscaping was carried out by the Stornoway Trust with the assistance of a Special Needs group. A local school was involved in the design of the display boards for the interpretive centre and actively followed the project from start to finish. Cost Other funding: Key Points Millrace: 270m | ||
